FAQs at Trasso Jiu Jitsu & Wrestling

Your First Class

What do I bring to my first class?

If possible, arrive 15 minutes early to meet the staff, sign a waiver, and get oriented. Bring flip flops or sandals — no shoes are allowed on the mats, so transitioning from sandals is easiest. If you have a gi, bring it. If not, rental gis are available and gis are also for sale at the front desk. For no-gi classes, wear a rash guard and shorts. A water bottle is highly recommended — we have a filtered water station you can refill as needed.

I would like to drop in and try a class — is that OK?

Absolutely! Every person is eligible for one free trial class. If you're dropping by for a second time, you can purchase a drop-in class. See our pricing page for details.

Uniforms & Equipment

What are the uniform requirements?

All uniforms must be clean — do not wear a dirty uniform that hasn't been washed after previous use. Gi classes require a gi (kimono) and the belt that represents your rank. No-gi and wrestling classes require a rash guard top and athletic shorts with no pockets.

I don't own a gi, rash guard, or athletic shorts — can I borrow or buy one?

Absolutely! If we have your size in our rental closet you can borrow one for that class. If you'd prefer to purchase, you can do so at the front desk.

Which class requires wrestling shoes?

You do not need wrestling shoes for Wrestling for Jiu Jitsu or Jiu Jitsu classes — in fact, it's recommended not to wear them unless you're recovering from an ankle, foot, or toe injury.

Cleaning & Hygiene

What are your cleaning protocols? Is the gym clean?

We care deeply about the health and safety of our students. Bathrooms and lockers are cleaned daily. All mats are swept between classes, then mopped and sterilized at least once a day. Our facility is equipped with Medify Air©, a medical-grade air purifier proven to remove 99.99% of airborne COVID-19 & SARS-CoV-2 particles as well as other viruses and bacteria. We also have a professional cleaning service that deep cleans the entire gym regularly.

Are the lockers and showers open to everyone?

Yes! All students and visitors have access to the lockers and showers.

Can I walk off the mats with no shoes?

No — always wear shoes, sandals, or flip flops when you're not on the mat. Walking off barefoot tracks bacteria and dirt onto the mat surface.

Kids Classes

What are the benefits of Jiu Jitsu & Wrestling for my child?

No matter your child's size, strength, coordination, or athleticism, they will benefit from training. Martial arts teaches discipline, perseverance, and respect, while naturally improving coordination, balance, social skills, reflexes, and flexibility. Most importantly, training builds self-esteem — giving kids the confidence to stand up for themselves and the physical skills to defend themselves if ever needed.

Will my child be safe?

Every student's safety is our top priority. Our 2.5-inch FUJI mats provide a safe cushion for falls. Every pole and wall within the mat space is padded. Our staff closely monitors all students throughout the entire duration of class.

General

What is basic etiquette at Trasso JJW?

No shoes on the mat. Shoes or sandals must be worn at all times when off the mat. Never wear a dirty or unwashed uniform. During class, students should remain quiet, focused, and alert. Spectators should be quiet and not distract the class. Parents — please do not coach your child during class; leave that to the instructor. Respect everyone at all times.

Are there men's and women's classes?

All classes at our school are currently co-ed — open to both men and women.

What is the difference between Folkstyle Wrestling and Wrestling for Jiu Jitsu?

Wrestling for Jiu Jitsu focuses solely on the neutral (standing) position — executing takedown offense and defense. In short, it teaches you how to take the fight to the ground. Folkstyle Wrestling is for student-athletes who wrestle for school (middle school, high school, college). It follows standard scholastic wrestling rules and includes neutral position, top position (tilts and pinning combinations), and bottom (escapes and reversals).
